The supermoon refers to the point at which the moon is both full and at its perigee, or when it's at its closest point to Earth and therefore appears the largest and brightest. A supermoon occurs approximately every 14 months, and appears up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the moon at its farthest point, or apogee. The most recent supermoon made an appearance on Friday night, July 12.
